Additional Information

With all the distractions that are part of our waking hours, it is no wonder that the simplest sounds of an ordinary day are taken for granted. Sounds like the crackling of ice, raindrops on a rooftop, the crunch of toast as its buttered, and even turning the page of a book are so commonplace that we seldom--if at all--take time to appreciate them. Yet, when the ability to hear these everyday sounds is taken away―as in Marsha Engle's case―we are humbly reminded of their value.

As she was slowly losing her hearing, Marsha collaborated with photographer William Huber to capture these ordinary sounds in stunning photographs, and they have collected them here in this unique and breathtaking book for both the hearing and hearing impaired to enjoy. 100 Sounds to See is a tribute to the beauty of hearing and a gentle reminder to the hearing world to listen to and appreciate everyday sounds.

I got this book at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2010. As the author states herself, in today's world of stress and pressure we forget how much treasure is all around us. We just have to be willing to see and! to hear it. Although I am a person who does take time to admire the world around, this book reminded me of some pictures that went unnoticed so far. What a lovely salute to the ordinary, everyday sounds that so many of us take for granted! This delightful little book should be on everyone's coffee table, to be browsed periodically as a reminder of how fortunate we are to hear. The sounds of everyday keep us in touch with our surroundings, our loved ones, and our many unappreciated blessings. Thank you, Marsha Engle and William Huber, for your charming reminder that we are often so busy focusing on our to-do lists, our daily schedules, and our problems that we ignore the beautiful sounds that surround us and that keep us connected to the world and with each other. Take time today to be aware of your acoustic environment and appreciate the sounds from street-musicians, the fax machine receiving a message, the turning of book pages, your stomach growling, and all of the other sounds that rarely are acknowledged with appreciation. And most important of all, protect your hearing by avoiding loud sounds that may damage your precious... Read more
This is the kind of book one curls up in front of a fire with a cup of coffee and a loved one, slowly savoring each page. The images are lush, the text is sparse but poignant, bringing to mind sights, sounds and smells from the entire spectrum of life. Whether sharing with a partner or a child, it's a warm communal experience that will touch your heart and enrich your life. I love this book.
