As anyone who's read my reviews before on games, books, shows, movies....I do my best to give you a review without any spoilers, I hate being told a important plot or twist before seeing it.....so doing so with 24 is a challenge because you never know what will happen; that's why the show is so great! Jack is back and hasn't missed a beat. There is great action, suspense, drama, and thrilling moments as you expect with Jack Bauer and the 24 writers to give, this one moves a lot quicker being half the day instead of the full "24" that we are all used to but trust me, just because its half, you do not get half of the excitement. Keifer Sutherland is an amazing actor and he has taken this role of "Jack Bauer" and made it into a real television icon and one of the best character's in the history of television in my opinion. So without giving away any real details, this is sort of like how most of the season's start out,...
I liked this better than Day 8, which, in all honesty, seems like a real hot mess in comparison. However, there was a lot that I struggled with in Live Another Day.
I'm not going to spoil it for you. But I will go so far as to say that, the more I think about it, the more I realize that the entire nine seasons of 24 can be understood as a metaphor for the death and destruction of the workplace in America. There is no loyalty or respect from the top down, no matter how many times and how many ways the employees save the bosses' bacon. Even the boss who seems to sincerely appreciate the worker one day is handing that worker over to nefarious foreign interests the next. Loyalty among employees will get you terminated, in one way or another. And the people who are best at their jobs are the ones who inevitably get scapegoated when something goes wrong, while the smooth talkers fail upward, their aforementioned bacon intact, thanks to the hard work and...
you want Jack Bauer, you got Jack Bauer. with his breathless whispering, his steely gaze, his saying "excuse me" with slight impertinence at least once an episode, and general badassery in general. while i find most of his action utterly deplorable, i am adult enough to excuse myself some tortured-hero-fantasying every once in a while. Replete with emotionally awkward Chloe O'brien (who is, herself, replete with gratuitous hacker/counter-culture eye-shadow and asymmetrical haircut). and people plotting on both sides to kill him and her.
there are the necessary internal double-crosses, the appearances of heretofore un-hinted at villains. a violent death or two (or three, or four!) near the end of each episode. and lots of fun multi-shot clock bits.
probably slightly disappointing to have watched week-to-week, but as a binge? oh, 'tis glorious. and 12-hours was a nice little half-episode thought (***SPOILER ALERT***): they basically get the full 24 hours...
