Additional Information

After no large cents were made in 1815, production resumed in 1816 with a new design, which would last in somewhat modified form until the end of the 1839. This series is known by various names including the Coronet Head Cent, Matron Head Cent, or more broadly as Liberty Head Large Cents. The new design was never considered to be a true improvement over the previous designs which had been seen on this denomination, yet it would be the first design for the cent which would last longer than a decade. The new 'Matron' Head Coin featured an enlarged head of Liberty. The fillet holding the hair on the previous Classic Head series was replaced by a coronet and the word LIBERTY was added in relief. The reverse was essentially unchanged and retained the "Christmas wreath" of Reich's 1808 design. While generally referred to as the "Coronet" type, this is not a universally accepted name. Some collectors prefer "Matron Head." Dr. William Sheldon, author of the standard reference for cents struck from 1793 to 1814, scathingly remarked that the figure of Liberty on these coins "resembled the head of an obese ward boss instead of a lady." or the other large cent you get up till 1857
