The Forties was a decade dominated by World War II. Everyone supported the war, with many Hollywood entertainers, most famously Bob Hope, volunteering with the newly-formed USO to help boost troop morale. Big Band leader Glenn Miller was too old to be drafted, but volunteered to lead an Army band. And while films like Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator made light of the war, others such as How Green Was My Valley and The Best Years of Our Lives echoed the thoughts of a world that by the end of a decade was still in recovery and looking to move forward.
