Media Reviews:
"Can't recall the last time I read an end of days novel so beautifully written or terrifyingly believable,Tragic Harrowing Unforgettable." James Balmain, author of "The Meek Inheritance" - The Scotsman and Glasgow Herald bestseller.

"Clever ...Insightful ...Brilliant. “2036 The Last Madonna” has contrived an apocalyptic near future based on deeply troubling current fact - a Day Of Judgement scenario that invokes empathy and anxiety right through to the last page." Giles Redwood, Chief Bookshop Guy,Pulp Fiction.

First, it was global warming, then a seven-year global drought, quickly followed by a biblical pandemic. A mixed-race woman, Mainini, and an uninfected young white girl, Sophia, trudge through a water-war-torn world heading for safety in Europe. Nothing lives in the desiccated landscape but flesh-eating insects, infected water bandits and genocidal End of Days zealots. Nothing flies but Chinese surveillance drones, vultures and the dust of the world falling through the air. Armed with little more than a knife to defend themselves against the cannibals who stalk the dead cities, they have nothing but the rags they are wearing - and each other. Mainini’s got her work cut out to keep Sophia alive, let alone safe from infection - and that's before they stumble across a long-foretold messiah who prays to bring all human suffering to an end with a world destroying asteroid - or a bullet.

More Media Reviews:

"This amazing post apocalyptic novel with its female hero and nail-bitingly horrific first chapter had me aghast and enthralled. In prose terms it's as if The King James Old Testament had been re-written by Cormac McCarthy and Harper Lee then edited by Raymond Chandler. Edgy writing, indeed." Vicki Gross, Manchester Mail and Herald.

"2036 The Last Madonna”, is a path to Hell paved with blood and bone. Illuminated by the world destroying asteroid Apophis, it's terrifying and brutal, yet beautiful and tender." Miriam Golding, Rogue Writers. S, Africa.

John Shaw Stewart immerses you immediately in a surreal, oddly almost beautiful, post-apocalyptic world of swirling dust and rolling hills of tree stumps. Though the action never lets up, even Joseph Conrad is given a run for his money with descriptive such as "With the sun melting their outlines to copper, their shadows elongated into one being; some Promethean creature hauling its terrible burden from a guilty past." Or, just a few sentences later, "…vultures floating like scraps of burnt paper in the sky."

The Last Madonna is a strange but haunting read. It took me a few pages to get in sync with the lyricism of such a brutal world, which perfectly mirrors the Silas-Marneresque relationship between the innocent child and the jaundiced whore, each of her own way...saves the other. And I was pleasantly surprised to find myself reading a tale in which, quite appropriately, it was just assumed that Mother Africa was the center of a world... Read more
A dying world, riddled with drought and disease. A continent ravished and destroyed by major powers. Local warlords with child soldiers. Religious fanaticism. Ecological collapse, and above a sinister asteroid, which may hit the Earth within days. This is the world that two cowled figures cross. The woman, former consort of a fanatical tyrant, and the mysterious girl she must guide to safety.

While many novels have written on these scenarios, This book is set apart from them by the quality of John Shaw Stewart’s writing, and its horrifically powerful imagery. Even within this world of total collapse, and human depravity, there is hope, persistence and the chance for renewal. It reminds me a bit of the early J.G. Ballard, novels such as "The Burning World" and "The Crystal World".

It is a story that kept me interested until the end. I hope there will be more books in this series.
