Additional Information

By 2084, global warming has proven worse than even the worst-case projections of scientists at the turn of the century. No country and no individual has escaped. I'd urge anyone curious about this book to disregard reviews claiming "2084" is full of awkwardly-delivered propaganda. Nothing could be further from the truth. Like most reviewers, I found the book written with clarity, passion, and an unbelievable understanding of this global danger we're facing.

Mr. Powell's command of art and science provides us in the present day with a look at a possible (though not avoidable) future. At the end of "2084," I felt as if I'd gained a more human understanding of global warming, because I can close my eyes now and imagine the many changed landscapes, the many dead and destitute.

We've seen unimagined nightmares in history caused by technology, but with this issue we have had decades of fore warnings and predictions. Do you wonder what would happen across the world if the problem progresses unchecked? Read the book. Do you need a reason to do something about our situation? Read the book! Are you on the fence, or just... Read more
I was assigned this reading for a college class dealing with climate change and literature. For being only 91 pages, Powell packed so much hypothesis and real life examples that made this reading turkey amazing. The America First act nearly mirrors the SB 1070 acts of 2010 and uses the uproar to predict the outcome of the government. Which can be seen as fairly accurate considering this year's presidential race. It also predicts water wars which have begun to materialize in India and Pakistan as of Sept 2016. Powell used history, science, and logical thinking to create a fictional account of the affects of global warming in 2080 (written in 2011) that are extremely plausible.
This book is around 70% believable -- an interesting speculation on how the world will turn out if we fail to limit emissions from burning greenhouse gases. On the one hand, this account underestimates the likelihood that renewable energy will spread dramatically lessening some of the impacts of climate change. On the other, the damage from melting and rising sea levels seems to be underestimated. Predicting impacts of massive numbers of people escaping the ravages of a hotter climate is certainly tough, but the collapse of our industrial civilization seems like an extreme outcome. Of course it is anyone's guess how things will turn out, but I simply cannot see falling back to technology prior to the industrial revolution. Much food for thought here.
