Japanese Trapdoor Snails are excellent at keeping your tank (or pond) and any live plants free of algae with minimal damage to the plants.
Can grow up to 2 inches or more in length!
These snails' shells are spiral-shaped, but otherwise they vary in appearance - each snail has a slightly different pattern and coloration, and no two snails are exactly alike.
In addition to eating algae, they consume uneaten fish food and waste on the floor of tanks and ponds!
Japanese Trapdoor Snails are named for their operculum, which is a tough plate that protects the snail by forming a seal at the edge of the snail's shell when its soft body is retracted inside. They are also known by the name Chinese Mystery Snails. They are large for freshwater snails, and are quite unusual-looking yet attractive. They vary in coloration and patterns, but usually have more natural-looking colors such as brown and green. They also serve some very useful purposes. They clean algae off of glass, plants, and decorations, and they keep your substrate clean and the correct color. They are totally safe with any fish, shrimp, or plants, and are completely peaceful. Trapdoor Snails are quite large as adults, growing up to 2" in size.
RECOMMENDED TANK PARAMETERS: - PH level range: 6.5 to 8.0 - Temperature range: 68 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit - Water type: Soft to medium hard - Recommended Aquatic Arts tank mates: Other types of snails (Nerite snails, Mystery Snails, Sulawesi Snails, etc.), dwarf shrimp (such as Blue Velvet shrimp, Sakura Fire Red Cherry Shrimp, Bee Shrimp, etc.). They can also be kept with small to medium-sized, non-aggressive fish. - Additional notes: With trapdoor snails, it's a good idea to make sure the water line in your aquarium isn't too high, as these snails tend to climb up to the water line to breathe air. Other than algae and biofilm, they also eat fish or invertebrate pellets and blanched vegetables such as zucchini, kale, spinach, or cucumber. Snails are very sensitive to copper, so watch out for copper if you use tap water in your tank.

My order of 5 large Japanese Trapdoor Snails arrived much earlier than expected. They were well-insulated and securely packed. After about 24 hours, all of the snails appear to be healthy and active and are contentedly exploring the aquarium. An extra snail was included. Needless to say, I'm very happy with this purchase. ____________________
Just a few days later, I have to amend my review. (I still give the seller 5 stars since the problem is my fault - not theirs.) I had neglected to do the basic research on trapdoor snails. They are cold water snails and do not belong in a tropical aquarium. I'm in Florida, my aquariums are warm and my house is warm (I don't use the a/c any more than absolutely necessary, which for me isn't often since I don't mind the heat and love low electric bills). Anyway, the poor snails appear to be on the way to snail heaven soon. One died today, one is almost dead, and I don't expect the rest to last much longer.
So I ordered 5, got 6. Whatevs. Next morning there were 3 babies. It's now been 3 days since I got them and I have 6 adults and 7 babies, so I'm trying to separate them to avoid more babies but oh well. It's not that I don't want more snails, I do, but I might run out of room at this rate!
they arrived all living and started working right away in our kio pond. I even got an extra one which was really nice. I ordered a second set and no problems. The company is great and when you write to them you're answered not ignored. I would say you can't go wrong with them and I like forward to ordering from them again. Excellent company that's hard to find anymore these days.
