Sgt. Randy Sutton began his career as a 19-year-old police cadet in a small New Jersey town, then moved after 10 years to Las Vegas, where he spent the next two decades not in the midst of the sin city's glitz and glamor, but patrolling the parts of it the tourists don't see, primarily the residential areas inhabited by the middle- and working-class people who make it go and those who, in turn, provide them with the goods and services they need. In this book he tells the stories of 18 incidents from his career, ranging from the violent to the heart-warming, several with surprising twists (the "wife-beater" who turned out to be beating his mother, for example), and finishes with a fictional Christmas story about an embittered and bereaved officer who finds redemption through a stray pup and an elderly black woman and her granddaughter.

Sutton's chief fault is that he sometimes leaves the reader wondering how things turned out (Did young Jose survive his injury? What became... Read more
The author served at the beginning of his career in a small New Jersey town and then moved on to Las Vegas where most of this book occurred. There are twenty short stories included. Some of them are quite moving. Responding to a family dispute in a low income neighborhood the officers encounter a large male beating a small female. They first figured it to be husband wife or boyfriend girlfriend. Turns out to have been son mother. The son jumps out the window to get away and is dead. The threatening crowd assembles. The mother screams out that the cops pushed her son out the window.

A young family is in their vehicle stopped at a traffic light. Drugged up gangmembers are in the car next to them. The gangboys shoot and the little daughter in her car seat is fatally shot.

A grandmother is trying to put her charges to bed. Gangmembers outside are making noise. She asks them to quiet down. The retaliate by breaking into her home and stabbing her to death. They leave... Read more
Really really good book. My school made me read this in the 11th grade and the entire class actually enjoyed it. It was action packed and there was never a dull moment. Coincidentally enough the author actually came to our school, talked to the student body, and then did book signing. Probably one of my favorite school required books thus far.

This year i need to read a 300 page book about the constitutional convention of 1987. 300 pages on a 3 day convention!!!! This is going to suck
