A Deliberate Life is the inspiring and oftentimes humorous story of Pamela Haskin and her life in the Alaskan Bush. She says, "I'm not trying to escape society as so many do who come to the Bush. I'm choosing a lifestyle! I want a life with adventure and purpose." Life on the homestead was certainly different from the one Pam had known; a woodpile instead of a thermostat, no running water or indoor plumbing, no electricity, and no phone. And, she chose this! Go figure.Pam touches something in each of us that says life can be more than ordinary. We do indeed have a choice, and we either exercise or surrender that choice each day. Pam's choices changed her life dramatically and set an example for the rest of us. Between these pages you will find a hearty and entertaining example of the power of choice.

I couldn't even guess how many 'back to the land" style books I've read, let's just say lots and lot's. I've noticed a common thread through most of them, idealist people relocate to the wilderness to get away from the pressure of modern life.
"A Deliberate Life" continues that theme. the author's husband wants to be "man of the woods," she goes along and spends the next 5 years living a subsistence lifestyle filled with the kind of stress and pressure you'd be hard put to duplicate being poor in mid-town Manhattan. No money, no house, no water, no toilet, no bath, no lights, bears in the woods, loneliness, isolation, no family, and cold. They spend their 5 years in the woods doing their best to acquire all the things they left behind in Phoenix but can't because they can't earn enough money.
Finally they give up life in the woods, move to the local community, build a bigger house and start acquiring as many middle class accoutrements as they can afford. I...
I had trouble rating this book. I finally gave it a 4 star but with severe doubts. It was written fairly well. This couple went to Alaska but it wasn't like they had real hard ships. When they ran low on supplies, they just went to the store and bought food just like we do in the lower 48. That isn't what I want to read about when I buy books like this. I want the pioneer style people that hunt for their food and raise a garden, cut their own wood, etc. I'm not interested in what Joe Blow spent on groceries for six months. For the most part this couple lived just like everybody else with gas stoves and lights etc. Boring!
I first knew about this author from an article in Guidepost. I was intrigued when I found out Pamela H. wrote a book about the Alaskan wilderness and bought it on Kindle. I love the adventure, the resourcefulness, hard work, beauty of life and spirituality I found in this book. There is a truth in this book that even when man is alone, he is never alone
