A Mossad Agent In Southern Sudan: 1969-1971 An Operation Log
“Tarzan†– David Ben Uziel, is the epitome of the all-round Israeli ghter: A curious eld agent, thor- ough and tireless, sensitive to others – no matter the circum ances. When, youthful and vigorous as a boy, he became a hero, “Chapter from a Diary†allowed us a rare glimpse of hi orical moments in the far o neighborhood of South Sudan. Thus, it was only natural that Zvi Zamir, Head of the Mossad, Intelligence, and Special Operations – with an emphasis on special – entru ed “Tarzan†with the Aid mission of assi ing freedom ghters in southern Sudan between 1969-1972. This was unequivocally a legitimate war for the purpose of righting generations of wrongdoing: slavery and the slave trade, humiliating exploitation, violation of human dignity, and depriving millions of their liberty - all for imperiali control and territorial and economic gain. Tarzan carried out the mission with impressive success, under extraordinary conditions, with the assi ance of devoted people like himself, making a name for Israel and himself and achieving a place of honor in the hi ory of South Sudan and the region. Of all Israeli attempts to break through the periphery closing in from the beginning, almo all of them serving short-term goals but that ultimately failed, South Sudan is a unique exception; after a ruggle of ve decades, lled with successes and failures, the State attained independence. Now, Israel is a popular and familiar friend that in spite of all the di culties will be able to help the young State. In “Chapter from a Diary†and appendices, the writer enables us an intimate glimpse of a place, people, and circum ances - truly hi ory in the making, for part of which I had the privilege of being an active witness. We feel as if we were there with “Tarzan†and the freedom ghters, which makes this an unusual document in time and space.
