This collection of twenty five stories has been written specifically to help children learn and master everyday skills and activities ... toilet training, tidy up time, hair-washing, dressing, bath time, teeth cleaning, mealtimes and fussy eating. Using Susanâ€™s well-known therapeutic story approach, it offers families, therapists and child care centres â€˜a spoonful of story medicineâ€™ as a creative strategy for lifeâ€™s daily challenges.

These stories are not â€˜instructional storiesâ€™ in the sense of giving step by step details on how to do things (e.g. how to use the potty). Instead, by touching the childâ€™s imagination, they aim to motivate the child to want to â€˜give it a goâ€™. There are no guarantees here, but if an imaginative story approach can help a little (sometimes even a lot!) then what a wonderful gift this can be for both the child and the family.
Each story is accompanied by anecdotes and/or suggestions for use. Some stories are very simple, written in full rhyme, and obviously for use with 2-4 year olds. Some stories are longer, more serious and intended for 5 year olds and up. Some are influenced by cultural wisdom, some are humorous and light hearted.
The writer speaks from experience. Her own story writing career began years ago with a story called Bubble Bear that helped her three year old son accept and enjoy having his hair washed. Many years later, she found herself writing a story to help give one of her grandsons the confidence to use the potty. It was the recent success of this story (about a Little Red Car that needed an oil change) that inspired this Spoonful #4 collection.
