Nobody, NOBODY hunts deer like this fool. Running around like a idiot shooting at (and missing) anything that moves. Only someone who doesn't have a clue would depict a backwoods country boy like this. This movie was unbelievable from the start and makes it unwatchable to any self respecting outdoorsman.
It's too bad there isn't a two 1/2. The murky photography is subtle for the suspense being built from that 'single shot'. Sam Rockwell is, as almost always-excellent. A surprising entrance as a bad guy--Jason Isaacs (now we know where he went after the great series 'Brotherhood' ended :-) It's clear Rockwell is still mourning the loss of his father's farm being foreclosed , his marriage is ending, his two year old son doesn't seem comforted being with his father the one time we see him after interrupting sex between the baby sitter and lowlife prison con. William Macy is a great actor, but his affectations overwhelm his curious appearance. The speech throughout is often unintelligible, the drunk speech by Rockwell's friend of twenty years to explain everyone's motivation is garbled. We are supposed to feel Sam's betrayal but instead, you 'll find yourself turning the volume up 'what the heck did he say??' The ending is apt, though you root for the 'basic good guy who's...
It's a dark and brooding "hillbilly-murder-mystery" art film. If you like films in this rare genre such as "Deliverance" or "Joe" you will like it. It's very well done and has many unexpected twists and turns. You will understand it better if you grew up in the country and speak "southern" ... There are a couple of long twangy drunken passages of dialogue that are SO countrified that they will be nearly unintelligible for some people... I was almost expecting subtitles! It's backwoods country atmosphere is rarely seen in such well-produced films... It's very well done and totally held my interest every minute of the way through. I cared about these believable authentic characters. The villain is appropriately evil and doesn't overplay it. The ending is unique. It's a good story, well-told... kind of a powerful Shakespearean tragedy slowly unfolding in the American backwoods.
