Additional Information

Still recovering from his life-threatening wounds, private detective Charlie Parker investigates a case that has its origins in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II in this “all-out thrill ride” (Suspense Magazine).

Parker has retreated to the small Maine town of Boreas to regain his strength. There he befriends a widow named Ruth Winter and her young daughter, Amanda. But Ruth has her secrets. Old atrocities are about to be unearthed, and old sinners will kill to hide their sins. Now Parker is about to risk his life to defend a woman he barely knows, one who fears him almost as much as she fears those who are coming for her.

His enemies believe him to be vulnerable. Fearful. Solitary.

But they are wrong. Parker is far from afraid, and far from alone.

For something is emerging from the shadows…

I gave this Five Stars because there aren't any more. This is better than five stars.
38. The Song of Shadows by John Connolly - November 2016 – 5 Strong Stars –

The quality of John Connolly’s writing is never in question. He is an artist and a very good technician. His theme has remained Dark Angels and the Evil that exists in the world. He is always much more connected to that struggle with evil and the huge effort and ugliness of the the effort to survive the constant attacks we all feel and fear. He deals with the fear very chillingly. His protagonist has paid as high a price for his continued life possible. He continues to dedicate all his time and energy to the struggle for himself and those around him. When he sees something wrong he takes it very seriously, more so that those around him. His friends Angel and Louis are outsiders as in Charlie Parker himself. Their outside-ness may be what gives them the strength to fight what is... Read more
Simply put, this is another great book in a great series. It's hard to make distinctions of quality between the individual entries because they're all so good. I mostly read ebooks nowadays, but I went back this year and purchased every Charlie Parker novel in hardback because I know I'll return to them again and again.

The plots are exciting and immersive. Connolly has the ability to really flesh out characters and bring them to life like Stephen King did in his earlier days. There is also a lot of wit and dark humor to be found. I think what I like most is the literary quality of Connolly's writing, as I constantly find myself pausing to re-read lines in order to appreciate his expert crafting of phrases.

I also respect the amount of research he does for each novel, which is made clear from the authentic detail as well as the notes included with each book. I'm a former cop and PI, and it amazes me how someone from Ireland can write about American places and... Read more
Charlie Parker comes across all kinds of horrors in his work as a Private Detective, particularly for one who is sensitive to or who tends to attract things of a somewhat supernatural character. The horror that comes up in A Song of Shadows however is one that is rather disturbingly entirely man-made - or, depending on your view of evil, perhaps not - extending to those involved in the running of the Nazi death camps during WWII, and their victims.

Parker got a bit too close to the after-life in his last case, and at the start of A Song of Shadows he's in recovery in the small coastal town of Boreas in Maine. Lucky to be alive at all, he's making his first tentative, painful steps to recovery, but - needless to say - it's not too long before trouble turns up on his doorstep, and needless to say, it's never anything minor either. A dead body washed up on the beach, a burnt house with a family murdered and their son missing, a young neighbouring girl who has unsettling... Read more
