Picture South Africa ten years from now: Are the angry poor rising up and seizing land and businesses? Or has economic reform created jobs and growth? Is an increasingly desperate government clamping down on freedoms? Or do the middle classes still braai in suburban bliss?
South Africa is at a tipping point, and small shifts in political and economic conditions can bring about dramatic changes. Unemployment, slow growth, threats to freedom of speech, and poor education can send the country in any direction.
Leading scenario planner Frans Cronje identifies the key trends that will shape our future. Will South Africa follow the Narrow Road, the Wide Road, the Rocky Road or the Toll Road? His four scenarios for the country are sobering, sometimes shocking, but also hopeful.

I found this book to be weak. The author goes to huge lengths to explain the methodology he will be using, in short, he provides 4 possible scenarios that could occur in South Africa. They are 1) ANC would implement 'western market' market reforms, massively boost growth and economy, democratic freedoms will be maintain and SA will look like a Western democracy 2) ANC cracks down on democratic freedoms but employs rightist economic policies which sees huge growth - i.e. we become a mini China 3) ANC goes the Zimbabwe route, nationalization and state controlled economy and suppresses freedoms 4) ANC just bumbles along with no clear policy and eventually after a decade of low growth the DA gets into power in 2024 - and after that the DA could lose power again in 2029 to an EFF/Labour party if they can't things around in 5 years. The author does not give an opinion as to which scenario is more likely and overall the book seems poorly researched, which is maybe why no opinions are...
This is a 'must read' for anyone living in South Africa during these turbulent times under the rule of the worst President yet. Frans Cronje clearly outlines the signs to look for that will indicate where the country is headed. It's as close to crystal ball gazing as you'll get but in the same way that Clem Sunter's High Road/Low Road gave due warning to those in power as much as to the people. The right people to read Our next Ten Years hold power in an ANC government hijacked by a self-serving clique driven by cronyism and greed. If they do not win control back to the side of democracy they will fail Mandela and the country we love.
Every South African, and anyone interested in South Africa, should read this book and ponder Frans Cronje's four scenarios. And they should ask themselves in which direction is South Africa heading, and what can I do about it?
Thoroughly recommended (and I seldom bother to return to Amazon to share my thoughts).
