Additional Information

1709. Europe is in the grip of the coldest winter for a century. Ports freeze. Cattle die. People starve. Mutiny and desertions rattle the French army leaving Louis X1V to search for peace on almost any terms. Captain Daniel Rawson acts as an interpreter at the negotiations in The Hague, feeling acute frustration when the talks collapse. While the resumption of war looms close at hand again, Daniel is given a personal mission by Marlborough himself which takes him deep behind enemy lines. If he survives, the Battle of Malplaquet, the bloodiest yet, awaits him…

If you enjoy the superb story telling of Aleixandre Dumas, the wonderful adventurousness of John Buchan and the historical accuracy of Cornelius Ryan, do not buy this book. I cannot speak for the author's other published works (which appear to be popular and extensive); but this particular book is near to being utterly silly. Plots are topical at best, character development is less detailed than the plotting and the overall composition is more ideally suited for a youngster, which however is compromised by the graphic violence. Not particularly compelling; 2 stars.
Marston is another of the rare breed of authors that focuses on the British Army rather than the Navy. He creates spellbinding plots arround actual historical events during the French revolution period. A book for those who read for pleasure and wish to learn of the wider military historical events of this period. As always you can depend on Amazon and affiliates to provide quality and safe packageing of your books. By mistake I ordered 2 copies. Our bowling center is like a labrary where books get exchanged. I have received so many exceptionaly good comments on this story I have suggested they go to to obtain other books in the series
Easy to follow the ongoing career of main characters and maintaining the standard of the series .
