This steaming pile of worthlessness cost us half a day. Will not install, root drivers don't work, locks up computer, interface is amateurish and incomprehensible, and to top it all off: it's not Vista compatible (even though the package says it is).
Avoid like the plague.
I bought the ADS USBAV-192-EF Movie Capture Video Xpress in good faith to transfer carefully shot Hi8 video tapes from an expensive Sony camcorder to an equally expensive Dell P4, 2.4GHz, 512M RAM, with 300G free hard drive space, running fully-updated Windows XP SP2. What a frustrating waste of time! The bundled Muvee Autoproducer software doesn't let you edit the MPEG2 files it captures. It only allows you to make randomly shortened auto movies which cut off the actors/subjects in mid sentence! What about importing the same MPEG2 files into Windows Movie Maker 2? MPEG2 files captured using Muvee Autoproducer lose their sound when imported in Windows Movie Maker 2! All you get is silent video. What about importing the same MPEG2 files into other movie editors? There are plenty of trial versions on the Web... That generally results in tinny audio. What about starting over by recapturing the original Hi8 tapes directly into Windows Movie Maker 2? That results in much lower quality .wmv...
If you don't have a lot of money and are technically good, this may work for you. I have a newer PC running XP SP2. (1)Unit did not work with SB live sound card so had to enable the onboard sound. (2) I had several Blue screen lockups with the included software; probably a bug in the software. (3) Every time I inserted a VHS or rewound a tape, my computer rebooted. I believe this was caused by interference feed from my VCR to the USB connection.
My workaround was to unplug the device, insert or rewind the tape then plug it in and begin capturing the video. I tried several cables, another VCR and different USB connections but the problem remained.
The Video and audio were acceptable and with a lot of nursing I was able to make it work. The reason I did not return this as defective is I because I did make it work and did not want to spend the time and money to return this item. I did spend the time to warn those thinking about this item. If you are technically...
