Additional Information

Eighteen-year-old Tally is absolutely sure of everything: her genius, the love of her adoptive family, the loyalty of her best friend, Shane, and her future career as a Nobel prize-winning astronomer. There's no room in her tidy world for heartbreak or uncertainty―or the charismatic, troubled mother who abandoned her soon after she was born. But when a sudden discovery upends her fiercely ordered world, Tally sets out on an unexpected quest to seek out the reclusive musician who may hold the key to her past―and instead finds Maddy, an enigmatic and beautiful girl who will unlock the door to her future. The deeper she falls in love with Maddy, the more Tally begins to realize that the universe is bigger―and more complicated―than she ever imagined. Can Tally face the truth about her family―and find her way home in time to save herself from its consequences?

About a Girl is the powerful and entrancing conclusion to Sarah McCarry's Metamorphoses trilogy.

A wryer, more accessible Juniper, Gentian, and Rosemary by way of Echo with some of The Orpheus Obsession thrown in.

(I compare things because I love them, I do have some librarian left in me).)

Also, about the Pacific Northwest; also, a crabby but ultimately likeable heroine; also, a diverse cast that feels true to the places where it is set, also, the dangerous, sexy love interest is NOT evil and there are no easy answers to any of the questions brought up in the novel.

"My name is Atalanta, and I am going to be an astronomer, if one's inclination is towards the romantic and unspecific. My own inclination is neither, as I am a scientist. I am interested in dark energy, but less so in theoretical physics; it is time at the telescope that calls to me most strongly--we have telescopes, now, can see all the way to the earliest hours of the universe when the cloud of plasma after the Big Bang cooled enough to let light stream out, and it is difficult... The final book in the Metamorphoses trilogy follows Tally, Aurora’s daughter, abandoned by her and raised by the narrator from All Our Pretty Songs and the narrator’s friends.
Aspiring astronomer Tally runs off to the West Coast to find out who her father is, and instead finds out her mother’s dark fate. She’s also running away from the awkward situation of having slept with her best friend Shane, and finds a very different romantic relationship with a girl called Maddy, who may just be an immortal Medea.

There were several things I didn’t like about this book. First and foremost, the consequences of Maddy being Medea felt tame. This is the woman who murdered her own children to get back at someone whom she had loved and been betrayed by– there wasn’t sufficient horror, sufficient danger; sufficient tension. Yeah, Medea has mellowed into Maddy and is trying to forget her past– but that past doesn’t catch up with her... Read more
Tally, age eighteen, is sure of a lot...Her family, her love of astronomy and her best friend Shane. When he plays a bootleg cassette of an obscure and mysterious musician named Jack, who only cut the one album, but was legendary in the way his limited number of concerts were received, even to animals and birds supposedly flocking into the performances, it leads to their first sexual experience.
This freaks Tally out and when Shane stops hanging out with her and doesn't call, she has a crisis that expands until she starts wondering why the mother she's never met, abandoned her on Aunt Beast's doorstep. None of the three adults she lives with are willing to tell her anything, but a mysterious elderly man who lives nearby and who Tally befriended, shows her an old photo that seems to have her mom and the mysterious Jack arm in arm. The older man tells her he knows where Jack lives and will buy her a plane ticket to help her find him.
Tally leaves without telling anyone where... Read more
