I have a pair of Adidas Terrex XCR Goretex/Leather shoes that I love. Sadly, I wore the soles off the bottom of them - well to the point they were failing me on the trail. I was looking for a shoe with similar qualities (low cut but stable, waterproof, sure footed and not too heavy). The Terrex Fast R hits these categories though not as competently without modification. Namely, I found the drawstring laces too finicky and I never felt really secure no matter how hard I tugged on those pesky things. These shoes aren't cheap so it's not lightly that I decided to cut these things out, but I was quite happy with the other shoe characteristics, so I gave it a go. Simple enough, I cut the drawstrings and replaced them with nylon athletic laces. That made a big difference to the feel of the shoe - adding stability and having an all-around better fit to my foot - which is slightly narrow.
Overall, very pleased with the shoes. They have served me well on both intermediate local...
I had a different version of these shoes, wore them daily during the summer at a summer camp, went to Italy and wore them for 6 months out of the nine months I was there (a lot of walking too, but I wanted to flaunt some Italian leather shoes, which was why I switched for the last three months). Then I wore them for the following school year and now they are my go to shoes if I know work will get messy. They wore so amazingly well, the Goretex holds up to its name. The only thing I'm hoping with these new shoes is that they won't stink as much (but I guess that's a sacrifice for having somewhat waterproof shoes). I would recommend these shoes to anyone.
I've had these shoes for about 3 months now, and I am very happy with them. I don't use them for hiking, but for daily use as a painting/remodeling contractor. They are far from the comfort of a sneaker, but my feet don't hurt at the end of a long day. What amazes me is how well they have held up. I am constantly on ladders and on roofs, and the soles are still in excellent shape. Most others have worn or separated by this time for me. The Gore-Tex is a huge plus because my feet stay dry walking through wet grass all morning, and when cleaning out paint sprayers. If cold water gets on the shoe, my feet stay dry, but they do feel the cool. The grip on them is great for walking roofs, which I always look for because I hate heights, but have no choice other than to walk them. I think the biggest downside is the lacing system. This one works better than most quick lace systems, however most people have one foot slightly larger than the other, and this can make you not feel so stable when...
