“Beginners aren’t imbeciles! The boring repetition of inane exercises in ‘modern’ methods is an insult to the intelligence.” ―Adrienne

Here is a rapid and practical way for tourists, students, and businesspeople to master the basics of Spanish and begin speaking it. Unlike traditionally dry language texts based on rote memorization and repetition, Spanish in 32 Lessons encourages creativity, allowing the learner to discover his or her own style. It gives the reader the essential, simplified grammar without force feeding, operating from the premise that grammar comes easily once vocabulary is properly learned. To that end, Spanish in 32 Lessons gives an indispensable vocabulary list that includes the three-thousand most-used words. Complete with tests, a sample lesson plan, and a full answer key, Spanish in 32 Lessons is perfect for the self-learning beginner or for those just brushing up on their skills.

I got to lesson 7 in this book before I got frustrated with it and moved on to something else. I loved the format, but then I got annoyed at the occasional minor typo or ambiguity. For instance, it would ask you to translate a sentence and the answer in the back would be worded as a question. Or sometimes it will give multiple vocabulary words and would only give one definition even though I know they must mean slightly different things and I wish they would define each word. But I did like how it split up topics and gave lots of exercises to practice.

I decided to try a different book instead and have started "Spanish Demystified", which I just started so I can't evaluate it very well.
Spanish in 32 lessons written by Adrienne in 1977 is very ahead of the game because of the dynamic way Adrienne teaches basic conversation in Spanish.

This is a book for fast learners only who prefer to acquire Spanish in an organized way without grammatical explanations, a technique which language researchers from the UK and the USA have named "Lexical Approach".

Spanish in 32 lessons stands out of the crowd because the information it presents is organized into a simple system that is very easy to follow, such as charts and numbered sequence of words or phrases. However, if you still need basic knowledge of Spanish, such as how to pronounce the alphabet, syllables, and roll your "r's" and you are self-motivated you can easily work with Spanish in 32 Lessons alongside an app such as Google Translate, Bab.La (dictionary) or any other translation app. where you can type your new words and listen to spoken Spanish with translations side by side.

Most textbooks have mistakes of some sort...they're not perfect. I think the adrienne gimmick books have a lot to offer in terms of getting you speaking right away, using realistic everyday speech, phrases, vocabulary.

Contrary to one review here that said it's not a good place to start a language, I started with the French 32 lessons on which the Spanish is based (they mirror eachother very closely) and learned a lot - enough to go to Montreal and get around quite well after about 1 year of studying it.

I like her approach though - and I think Adrienne Penner was right about some things. She says in the intro 'A language is its vocabulary - there is no way to communicate without words no matter how good your grammar'. It's a point to not take lightly. Even now focusing on vocabulary is more revolutionary than you'd think in this grammar-centric world.

Her lists of idioms and the 'text boxes' throughout the book containing tips on verb use,... Read more
