- REAL AFRICAN BLACKWOOD: Dalbergia melanoxylon (also called Mpingo / Grenadilla) — a premium handle wood prized for its deep dark look and fine, even texture.
- ULTRA-DENSE “HEAVYWOOD”: Air-dry density about 83 lb/ft³ with basic specific gravity around 1.08 — serious heft and excellent wear resistance for hard-use knife handles.
- COLOR & GRAIN THAT LOOKS EXPENSIVE: Heartwood ranges dark purplish-brown with black streaking to nearly black; typically straight grain for crisp shaping and clean lines.
- MACHINES CLEAN, FINISHES SMOOTH: Fine texture helps it polish up beautifully; very hard wood—use sharp tools and pre-drill for pins/tangs.
- PERFECT SIZE FOR CUSTOM BUILDS: 5" x 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" block—ideal for full-tang handles, hidden-tang projects, turning, inlays, and other premium shop work. Each piece is unique.
African Blackwood grows in the dry savanna regions of central and southern Africa. Often completely black, with little or no discernible grain. Occasionally slightly lighter, with a dark brown or purplish hue. Use sealer to close the pores when finishing.
