When the Punch Brothers released the deluxe version of Antifogmatic, the main disk was a very good, cutting edge blend of bluegrass instruments and pop sensibilities. The extra disks included some, more traditional songs (on DVD) and an extra disk that included some really creative instrumentals.

So after releasing "Whose feeling young?" the Brothers most pop music-like album yet, folks might be wondering, if there would be no more sea shanties, bluegrass instrumentals and other gentler, less strident songs?

Enter "Ahoy!" which includes a mixed bag of 5 songs, probably the best sea shanty since "Lighthouse", one bluegrass instrumental (with some intense classical stylings), a blues number about moonshine, a second vocal bluegrass song and a final number which is quite discordant and minor key like. This short album is a great addition to the collection of any Blue Grass aficianado. The songs are really really good and make me smile happy smiles and I like to sing aloud when I wash dishes and I think of myself in some Appalachian cabin strumming a banjo and jumping up and down in overalls and a bent straw hat over my long beard. Oh yeah, it's good.
This is a terrific little album. The five songs display a wide range of the Punch Brothers' styles and talents. I particularly like Moonshiner. This covers a song which is usually heard in a lusty barroom style. Here, it's soulful, almost wistful and is quite lovely. This is some of the best download money I've spent in a long time.
