Wise Fools was Rush's hometown club of choice when this smokin' 1976 set was recorded for WXRT radio. This, here, is gritty blues greatness: All Your Love (I Miss Loving); It Takes Time; Sweet Little Angel; Feel So Bad; Please Love Me; Mean Old World; Woke Up This Morning; High Society , and more!

Otis Rush has always been one of the enigmas of the Blues World. He has retired, refused to play, walked out on recording sessions, even changed his voice (ala "Screamin' and Moanin'). Otis has not had a CD release in seven years since the excellent "Any Place I'm Goin'" set in 1998 (a lovely innovative recording).
Otis and Buddy Guy are the last of the West Side Bluesmen. While Buddy seems to get more popular and out there, Otis seems to have gotten more reclusive. For example, he should have been on the "Lightning In A Bottle" DVD at Radio City in 2003! Otis has had a bad time with record companies, managers, royalties, and the rest of it. This is a re-issue of a long lost tape of him playing in Chicago in the 1970s. We hear a younger, stronger and very impressive Mr Rush.
This set was recorded at the Wise Fools Pub in Chicago. It was part of a Chicago Radio Station live concert series sponsored by 7 Up of all things. As with most of Otis' output it took years...
This album is about as close as you can get to experiencing great Chicago-style blues without living in Chicago in the 70's. This album is great from start to finish! It makes the listener feel as if they are actually in a smoky low down and dirty Chicago blues bar. I like to grab a beer and sit back on the sofa and put this CD on and just jam out and enjoy.
The way the album sounds, it sounds like a typical Friday night at the blues club, no showboating, no crowd pandering, just SOLID solid licks and takin' care of business!!
Theres some variety, from "jammin'" type blues to slower type melodies. His guitar sound reminds me of Freddie King; a little high pitched and "dirty" sounding. I love this album! I highly recommend this cd to anyone who loves listening to live blues, and that Chicago-type sound. A great album! Worth buying new or used!! My second favorite live blues album.
Otis doesn't seem to have the catalog of well produced (i.e. crisp, clear, loud) albums that truly represented his sound, at least not that I'm aware of. So this album is a very fresh breath of air as I would argue it is one of the Top 5 live blues recordings of a Chicago bluesmen at the peak of his game. Sound quality is outstanding, his gritty vocals are crystal clear (it is very obvious that Clapton is heavily influenced by Rush' vocal style) and his guitar licks scream from the speakers. I bought this and Son Seals' Live and Burning disc and I don't think I'll need to buy another live Chicago Blues disc for a long time. They both are gems. Turn it up!
