I don't normally write product reviews but I thought I'd share this one since I have had a bit of a journey with Altra this year. This is my fourth pair of Altra shoes this year. I run on road and trails at a variety of speeds ranging from slow to not quite as slow, and a variety of distances ranging from 5k to 100k. My first Altra shoe, earlier this year was the one 2. Light, fast comfortable and I loved it. Alas they didn't last long though and split down the side after just a few hundred kms and only about 6 weeks of wear. I loved wearing them but was disappointed with this. I had a big mountain trail event coming up in April and was in the market for a new trail shoe for that so I thought I'd try the Lone Peak 2.0. My expectations were good cushioning, trail friendly and hard wearing. They were way too wide to the point where they felt too big on me - like clown shoes. I persisted and kept them in the rotation though I did not wear them for the event - I didn't like the...
I have worn the Altra Lone Peak 2.5 shoes since December 2015. My purpose for writing this customer review is to share my experience wearing these shoes in Tucson, Arizona. I'm 42 years old and have run competitively for 30 years. My primary distance for training in the past three years has been half marathon.
I originally bought these shoes to use for trail running in Tucson. I quickly learned they are no good for the type of terrain here in southern Arizona. Most trails in my area are rocky, and the Altra Lone Peak 2.5 shoes simply do not have enough midsole cushioning for rocky trails. I could feel every rock and stone through the soles, and it hurt to land with the full force of my weight while running on this kind of terrain.
By contrast, I've found these shoes are excellent for hiking and walking. The uppers are made of an elastic material that stretches and breathes better than any other shoe I've ever worn, and so in the extreme heat of Tucson, the Altra...
I have run about 180 miles in my pair in about 3 weeks and have a few detractors to list. First, the sole is coming unglued from the foam. Second, the lugs seem to not be very sturdy as I am missing parts of a few and most show more wear than I feel like they should at less than 200 miles. Third, the mountain laminated picture on the outside of the shoe is peeling off. Fourth, this shoe is sized larger than previous models, so you would need to size a half size down. Fifth, because it is wide, turning sharp corners at speed causes my foot to tip off of the edge of the shoe because there isn't much lateral stiffness in the upper.
Now some good: Much lighter and faster feeling then the previous models. Cushioning is very good and smooths out rocky trails very well. Traction is great (until the lugs come off). Overall the fit is nice and having a soft upper really lets my foot expand as needed. No blisters or hot spots with these shoes.
