Additional Information

The Rand scientific expedition entered the lush wilderness of the Amazon and never returned. Years later, one of its members has stumbled out of the world's most inhospitable rainforest--a former Special Forces soldier, scarred, mutilated, terrified, and mere hours from death, who went in with one arm missing . . . and came out with both intact.

Unable to comprehend this inexplicable event, the government sends Nathan Rand into this impenetrable secret world of undreamed-of perils, to follow the trail of his vanished father . . . toward mysteries that must be solved at any cost. But the nightmare that is awaiting Nate and his team of scientists and seasoned U.S. Rangers dwarfs any danger they anticipated . . . an ancient, unspoken terror--a power beyond human imagining--that can forever alter the world beyond the dark, lethal confines of . . .

The book was of the best I have ever read. Contraire to top critics comments, I did not find flaws in the book at all. It was non-stop action and so well written. It should be made into a movie. I could not put the book down. I could easily visualize the whole book. This is the first book I have read by this author....I will no-doubt read a good share more. If you you like suspense, intrigue, romance and incredible imagination, this is the book for you. Knowing the rain forest wields a wealth of unknown medicines, strange animals, reptilians, insects, tribespeople and has a definite affect on our earth's well-being.....this book is a MUST READ.
Amazonia reminds me of those 1950s adventure movies where people find themselves in fantastical lost cities or facing peril from some long lost beast. To me its an old school adventure novel with aspects of science fiction. It come complete with a race against the clock, nefarious bad guys, lost tribes and genetically altered beasts. In many ways it reminded me of James Rollins Subterranean, which has a similar feel to it.

The book is well paced and provides a good balance of scientific explaination and exploration with narrative. Character development is satisfactory for an adventure novel although a couple of the minor bad guys appear to be from central casting. There is a female antagonist who is a real piece of work. I would have liked to have seen just a little bit more of her in the story.

To be honest the book is quite violent, in a comic book kind of way, but be warned there are a few beheadings. So if you are squeemish or buying for your children,... Read more
It's been said that Stephen King takes common, everyday items or events and scares you to death with them. Well, James Rollins takes unbelievable, hard to grasp ideas or situations and helps you accept them, even want to know them.
In Amazonia the reader is thrust into the depths of the Amazon Basin with all its superstition and rampant wildlife. Everyone knows about the wonder drugs that have been discovered in the plants and the pharmaceutical companies are vying to claim them. Four years ago a team of these hunters disappeared without a trace. The search was soon abandoned by all but the son of one of the team leaders. Then to everyone's surprise a man appeared in an Amazon mission but died before the missionary could identify him. One major block in the process was the fingerprint ten card of the body. It matched a man who had lost an arm during military service in the Middle East.
A new group came to find out what happened to the team and how Clark respawned an arm... Read more
