Additional Information

Kufi is the oldest of the six major Arabic calligraphy scripts in use today, and is the most recognized script as well. Whether on electronic devices names, book titles, bumper stickers, or store signs, kufi is the script of choice due to its almost perfectly engineered symmetry. Since the first Koran was written in kufi script, it is commonly used in decorating mosques with verses from the Koran. It is a very geometrically ornamented script and the calligrapher must not only master the drawing of the letters, but the geometrical principles underlying them. This book will examine all aspects of writing kufi, its abundance of letter forms, and its various shapes.

There were some things which stuck me as odd about the methods in this book because it differs from the standard methods of scripts such as Naskh or Thuluth. On of the most basic underlying principles that seems to apply across the board about Arabic scripts is the traditional proportion system. This book says Kufic script is instead based on geometric drawing and is designed and drafted, then filled in with ink. This is a very different method than the desing and drafting of a piece in most other scripts which employ more of a general spacing layout but the letters themselves are not drawn out prior to actually inking them. I don't know if this is the traditional method for this script or not. However considering the more ornate designs involved in Kufic scripting it is understandable.
