I purchased the Thorium AR through Amazon in March 2015. Living in California, I got my first use of it while camping in Yosemite mid November. Temperatures in the evening reached between Zero to Two Degrees Celcius. With a Columbia Shell on top and a Helly Hanson merino under-layer vest, I felt chill dripping down my back, sitting around the camp. Given its weight, it is warm, but there is nothing exceptional about it. The zipper doesn't lock, so I found myself pulling it up every so often. The cuffs are average elastic, and the one on my right wrist is already loose, with little to no use. There is down feather seepage, but probably less so than other no-name brands. So the fabric probably is stronger, and being matte, looks stylish. I tried my friend's Mont-Bell Ultra Light, that was purchased for about 2/3rds the price of the Thorium AR. Besides being feather light, what I noticed about the Mont-Bell was the immediate of feeling of warmth, bordering hot,...
Despite the endorsement of many friends and acquaintances, I resisted purchasing a down-filled jacket for years. I thought while others might need such luxuriously-warm puffery, I was tough enough to make-do with my 5-dollar-irregular cotton hoodies.
However, a few weeks ago, I had just finished a trail running race and my body was shutting down most functions - including the ability to thermo-regulate. I was reduced to jack-hammer shivering on a mild SoCal "winter" evening despite sporting my warmest dollar-store hoodie. My running friends - embraced in the warmth of their various down-filled jackets and sweaters - shook their heads at me in pity. One of my female friends offered to let me borrow the down sweater she was wearing. Its embarrassing that for a brief moment I considered taking her up on her offer. I suffered through but survived that frigid night in Malibu and was researching down jackets the next day.
For the price I got this jacket ($116.49 from Shop Heroic) I was skeptical at first if it was Authentic. However, after carefully comparing it to my other Arc'teryx Thorium jacket I owned, it left me without a doubt that it is in fact authentic. I love these jackets, they are very warm and very comfortable. They also vent tremendously well and do not limit your body or arm motion. Got many compliments on how the jacket looks, overall I'm very happy with this purchase.
