An insightful look at legendary 1960s girl group, the Shangri-las: four young street-smart girls from Queens, New York who, along with their producer Shadow Morton, invented the bad-ass but vulnerable image that would be the blueprint for rock 'n' roll heroines for decades to come. Death, longing, and abandonment colored their work, bringing them into a timeless romantic realm that transcended their genre. The Shangs' melodramatic and emotionally charged music mirrored the angst of teenagers who were growing up amid the familial and cultural unrest of the time; it inspired punk and Goth artists in the decades that followed, and still strikes a universal teenage nerve today.

This was a pleasure to read because of the writer's economical but highly engaging writing style. I knew nothing of the story of these girls from New Jersey who had such a lasting impact on performers that followed. I enjoyed finding out about them, and can only echo what another reviewer said - I'd like it if the author expanded this into a larger work.
The story of the Shangri-las was a very informative book. I was too young when then they came out. So I knew very litte about them. I now have their greatest hits.
The first thing I noticed about this book was it's... title. It's witty and from an era I can relate to - so I got interested. I love this group but only know about their music. I don't know about them, their impact on the culture around them or the what and the why that they're about. But that's exactly what I got out of this book. It's really well written with a lot of insight and information. I learned about the ladies of the Shangri-Las and they did it the best! They were punk rock, rock and roll and this story tells it to you so well. It's a rock history and social lesson from someone in the generation that could respect these girls for what they are - the leaders of the pack! Bad joke from me, but this really is a good book about the Shangri-Las. And that's why it's on Rhino. Read it and enjoy.
