Product Description

Unnumbered Symphonies - Overture 1940

On this fascinating and rewarding recording, Martin Yates leads the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in an all-Arnell program. The Sinfonia - effectively Arnell's 'Symphony No.0' - was long thought lost. In 2009, Arnell's daughter found this score among the papers of her late mother in Lincoln City, Nebraska. It is coupled with a long, dramatic, symphonic movement which the composer called Overture '1940.' The Dagenham Symphony was written in 1952. This is very approachable film music, ending with a catchy march, music that was used in the documentary Opus 68. Four years later came Landscapes and Figures - eight short movements with enigmatic titles. Arnell tells us that this attractive music had its origins in visual imagery and it is in his most persuasive mature vein, with memorable invention and brilliant orchestration.
