Book of the Year ChessCafe.com

One of the greatest chess legends of all time, Aron Nimzowitsch (1886-1935), is best known for founding the Hypermodernism school of chess, which emerged after World War I to challenge the chess ideologies of traditional central European masters. This first full-scale biography of Nimzowitsch chronicles his early life in Denmark, his family and education, and his fascination with the game that would become the focus of his life. Also included are explorations of his tournament games and records, his dispute with influential chess teacher Siegbert Tarrasch, and his role in the development of Hypermodern Chess. With detailed accounts of nearly 450 games and the only narrative of Nimzowitsch from 1914 to 1924, a period formerly cloaked in mystery, this volume offers the most thorough profile available of one of chess's greatest innovators.

I've been a Nimzowitsch fan for many years and have studied the English translations of his books. This book is vol. 1 of a proposed 2-vol. set covering the years 1886-1924. Of those years it is a complete compilation of all his recorded games, and game fragments. It is also a scholarly and comprehensive biography which retraces the grandmaster's career From Latvia, through Germany and Scandinavia, with his games presented at the appropriate places in the narrative. Many great photos. All of Nimzowitsch's own annotations are included, along with some games notated by other grandmasters. The authors have annotated some games that had never been analyzed in print before. The authors have produced an exhaustive and definitive masterpiece of this fascinating chess wizard. This is a marvelous production with a gold-stamped sewn library binding, printed on white acid-free paper (no dust-jacket). This is a fabulous book for all Nimzowitsch admirers and students of this great teacher.
I've just received this book on Nimzowitsch today and spent 3 hours reading it. This volume is absolutely fantastic. It combines the scholarship of the Encyclopedia Britannica, with the detail of a precise biography, along with the drama of a soap opera. I have been a Nimzowitsch admirer since I was a teenager. I've bought anything and everything that was published about him. This volume is by far THE BEST on the subject. Scrape together the 50 clams and buy it. You will NOT regret it.
This is an outstanding, beautifully researched, excellently written biography. I can not rate it more highly. If you enjoy biographies, particularly biographies of chess masters--you will be delighted with this one. Definitely a must buy.
