Around the Edge of the Olympics on a Mountain Bike

In this guidebook for cross-country mountain bikers, the author describes 24 of his favorite day trips up close to the Olympic National Park in Washington State. Most of the rides are on old logging roads he traveled while exploring a route for a trail around the perimeter of the national park. Several single tracks are also featured. Since none of the routes are yet official bike trails maintained for that purpose, riding any of them is an adventure. Although some of the rides go through old growth timber, their overall direction is across a landscape that was logged during the last century. Enough time has passed that the old clearcuts have greened up and no longer distract so harshly from the vistas of mountains, ancient trees and water these rides take people to. The many photographs in the book as well as the tone of the text highlight the regenerative qualities of the woods and land. All maps are hand drawn. Not only is this book essential to mountain bikers looking for new double and single tracks to ride in the Pacific Northwest, but also for people searching out new places to run trails, hike with dogs, and ride horses. With a little work, many of these routes could be made suitable for wheel chair athletes, too.
