Additional Information

Seminal progressive black metal band Agalloch has announced the re-issue of their first three albums Pale Folklore, The Mantle, and Ashes Against The Grain. All three albums feature new layouts and album photographs, plus The Mantle and Ashes Against The Grain have been re-mastered for vinyl by Colin Marston. Says lead guitarist Don Anderson, "We cannot underestimate the importance of these three albums in the development of our sound and our history. In hindsight I am most proud of the fact that neither of these albums pigeonholed us. It is the radical difference of each album that allows us to continue to experiment with our music and lyrical themes today. These three albums constitute a significant chapter in our history and I am excited to finally see a proper and official vinyl release of each one of them."

I'm not a huge fan of post-rock, (or maybe post-metal) or whatever genre they profess to be a part of. Heck I only heard about this album from a friend who swore it was worth it.

Well, he was absolutely right. This is far and away the best Metal album I have heard in a long time. Every song is wonderfully put together and together forms a masterpiece of an album. Nothing they have done since or before has come close in quality except possibly The Mantle, but I still think this album is better. At the very least it's a unique album. In its own words, "there will never be an ode like this again."
Simply put, this is a masterpiece among masterpieces. I could not agree with some of the comments below, . The most haughtily beautiful work of art i have heard in a really long time. The only other band that comes close to the emotions this band brings out, is Before the Dawn.

You might find it interesting, that i just learned of this band a few months ago. So i went out and got all their works at once. But this music is 10 years old.

The trifeca! But Limbs is an absolute gem so its hard to think it less!
I could tell from the first few notes that I was going to love Ashes Against the Grain. I've recently become a big fan of Agalloch's first two albums, which I've listened to non-stop for the last several months. Moving on now to the third release, I've found that they delivered another masterpiece here with an unforgettable, epic album. Ashes could be seen as a combination of their first two, but with some progression. The first two tracks see the return of Agalloch's alt-rock influences, prominent on Pale Folklore, but diminished on The Mantle. Haughm also mostly uses his black metal vocals early on. Along with this, the album features a song trilogy, made up of the three parts of Our Fortress Is Burning, similar in length to the first album's She Painted Fire Across the Skyline. Tucked in the middle, Fire Above, Ice Below and Not Unlike the Waves remind me more of The Mantle, with a mix of metal and folk music. Haughm's clean vocals also come to the forefront here, as...
