Tanka is music. From the most ancient days in Japan, tanka was chanted and sung in public performances. In the modern era, tanka has been performed as everything from spoken word to symphonic concerts. That musicality is the focus of the current issue, featuring the introduction of musical notation to represent the rhythms of tanka, as well as the use of â€˜samplingâ€™ to introduce bits of well-known songs into tanka sequences, the call-and-response patterns of worship into responsive tanka, and the awareness of music in our lives as well as our poetry.
