Have you ever wondered what a day in the life of an infant is really like? In this bluesy story, sometimes being a baby is enough to make you cry.
Oh, baby, wouldn’t it be grand to be a baby? No worries, no woes, the whole world doing everything for you. Like floating down easy street. . . . But wait one guitar-pickin’ minute. That’s a lie! Babies can’t talk, can’t walk, can’t even really chew. It’s enough to make the baby in this story blue, blue, blue. So get ready for a sad tale of soggy diapers, mushy meals, and sleepin’ behind bars that may make you cry, too — but more likely will make you giggle! Jamming with illustrator Lauren Tobia, Carol Diggory Shields gives a tip of the fedora to B.B. King in an ode to babyhood that’ll have readers feeling anything but blue.

A hilarious mash-up of B.B.King and a brand new baby. "I've got those baby stinkeroos..." The richly colored illustrations (unusual in the often pastel-toned world of children's book art) show a hip mom and busy older sister, plus clever musical allusions on every page. A great read-aloud (or sing-aloud) for new parents and for older siblings who might gain a little empathy for the new baby as well as pride that they've outgrown their own babyhood.
Who is Carol Diggory Shields?? She is so creative and clever and she certainly has an ear for the blues with empathy for baby problems. ha. This is hilarious and wonderful and really fun to sing to your child. Great picture book.
Baby's Got the Blues is a wonderful book to read aloud and a must have for any story time leader - if you're willing to channel just a bit of your inner blues singer. The author really nails that blues rhythm in this story full of funny moments that are sure to make your story time audiences laugh out loud, and the repeating refrain will likely have story listeners chanting along. I'm looking forward to sharing this with my story time audiences full of preschoolers, many of whom have recently welcomed a new baby into their households.
Whether it's the stinky diapers, the lack of good food, or an inability to run and play, this author gives older kids a glimpse into the life of a baby that might just give them a new perspective on a few things. Baby loses his blues at the end when his family reminds him of how much they love him and delivers lots of cuddles. The illustrator does a great job of portraying this baby's moods. My favorite spread depicts the baby in his crib...
