Additional Information

This bestselling DIY handbook now features new and expanded projects, enabling ordinary folks to construct 16 awesome ballistic devices in their garage or basement workshops using inexpensive household or hardware store materials and this step-by-step guide. Clear instructions, diagrams, and photographs show how to build projects ranging from the simple match-powered rocket to the more complex tabletop catapult and the offbeat Cincinnati fire kite. The classic potato cannon has a new evil twin—the piezo-electric spud gun—and the electromagnetic pipe gun has joined the company of such favorites as the tennis ball mortar. With a strong emphasis on safety, the book also gives tips on troubleshooting, explains the physics behind the projects, and profiles scientists and extraordinary experimenters such as Alfred Nobel, Robert Goddard, and Isaac Newton. This book will be indispensable for the legions of backyard toy-rocket launchers and fireworks fanatics who wish every day was the fourth of July.

I bought this book for my 6th grader nephew for Christmas. All the men (ages 12-55) spent time that Christmas day looking through the book and dreaming about making one of the projects! I also bought my nephew the stuff to build one of the projects -- the water rocket. He built it a few days later with the help of his grandpa and enjoyed it quite a bit. I only gave it four stars instead of five because I think all of the projects will require an adult to work with him and also require tools that not everyone may have. The parts lists are kind of long too, although some folks will have a lot of the stuff just lying around if they do a lot of home improvement stuff. So if someone in your family is "handy" and willing to help out a kid with the projects, it's a great gift and teaches lots of science, physics, mechanics.
We've had this book since 2012. As homeschooling parents of seven, we wanted to do more hands on science experiments with them. I also wanted to get my husband to do some of the teaching. Most of the projects we tried went very well, but a few did not perform as they should have even though we followed the directions and tried multiple times. Some of the items for other projects weren't easily obtained, so we had to make adaptations. Overall, we are very pleased with the book. It has helped us teach our children in a fun manner, made science very engaging, and has encouraged family time. -W
What happened to the good old days?

To quote a recent email I received, What happened to the days when, "we would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day but we were OK. We would spend hours building go-karts out of old prams then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built treehouses and dens and played in riverbeds with Matchbox cars. We did not have PlayStation, Nintendo Wii and Xbox or video games, DVDs or colour TV. There were no mobiles, computers, internet or chatrooms. We had friends and we went outside and found them! We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. We ate worms and mud pies, too."

What has happened to this generation?

How do we get back to those good old days? Well, step one, buy this book. Step two, read chapters one and two and build yourself a... Read more
