With his meditative landscape photographs, which have an almost calligraphic quality, Seoul-based Bae Bien-U is one of Korea's best known artists, and has influenced a generation of photographers during his many years of teaching. He first rose to prominence in his country with his series--ongoing for the past two decades--depicting pine groves, which are plentiful, as the pine is Korea's national tree, representing longevity. Beginning with a selection of images taken near Gyeongju's Silla Dynasty burial mounds, this stunning large-format volume assembles images from the entire series, which were shot exclusively in natural light, both day and night. Natural effects like fog and filtered sunlight add to the expressionistic quality of the images, which recall Western Romanticism but reflect a characteristically Korean visual vocabulary. This volume is published concurrently with an exhibition at London's Phillips de Pury & Company.

The book comes in an unusual package with two white cardboard pieces that slip over the book at the top and at the bottom leaving a strip of the book's cover exposed in the middle. Sliding off the cardboard pieces reveals the most exquisite cover. You forget momentarily this is a book, it looks more like a painting ready to be hung. As you proceed to open the book, you cannot but notice the feel of the pages. Thick and heavy, some slightly textured, the rest, like lustrous satin, a good base for the dreamy photographs within. These photographs dance and sway, draw you in, mesmerise, captivate. You find yourself in this sacred wood, wanting to keep exploring, page after page. The images are laid out beautifully and thoughtfully, offering twists and turns along the way. When you finally get to the last page, you are left with a deep sense of satisfaction and a desire to go through the book all over again.
If there is a reason why ebooks will never totally replace print, this...
I could sit and caress the cover of this book forever... let alone peruse the images in the collection. If you are a lover of nature photography and most especially trees, this book is unparalleled in quality of images and printing. I would, and have, recommended this book to others. Phenomenal!
