Additional Information

When Major League Baseball first expanded in 1961 with the addition of the Los Angeles Angels and the Washington Senators, it started a trend that saw the number of franchises almost double, from sixteen to thirty, while baseball attendance grew by 44 percent. The story behind this staggering growth, told for the first time in Baseball’s New Frontier, is full of twists and unexpected turns, intrigue, and, in some instances, treachery. From the desertion of New York by the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants to the ever-present threat of antitrust legislation, from the backroom deals and the political posturing to the impact of the upstart Continental League, the book takes readers behind the scenes and into baseball’s decision-making process.

Fran Zimniuch gives a lively team-by-team chronicle of how the franchises were awarded, how existing teams protected their players, and what the new teams’ winning (or losing) strategies were. With its account of great players, notable characters, and the changing fortunes of teams over the years, the book supplies a vital chapter in the history of Major League Baseball.

Great detail on a topic that is an important part of baseball's history, but not often written about. I wanted to rate this book higher but there were three things that held it back: (1) After 150 pages of great material, there was a nearly 20 page chapter that repeated the highlights of the first 150 pages. Totally unnecessary, absolutely nothing new. (2) The book was poorly edited. Lots of errors ... the kind that don't get caught by spellcheck ... and some mixing up of names. (3) The book strayed off topic sometimes into related and interesting areas, but the connection back to their impact on expansion was kind of sketchy.

Still recommended as the subject, particularly the early expansion years, was well covered
Good and interesting information on the expansion era.

It could have been better edited, as there are some inconsistencies in how information is presented, and a few factual & spelling errors.

Still, it covers the subject in a unique way.
This book was very well written. I enjoyed learning about how the different expansion teams were formed. It was interested to learn how the moves of the Giants and Dodgers helped influence expansion.
