Although it's been several years since I read this book, I do remember the insight it provided on an oft-quoted passage of scripture: Malachi 2:16. This passage, where God decrees that He hates divorce, has often been cited by many well-meaning Christians as a way of prohibiting divorce. Yet this book makes a strong case that there are situations beyond adultery that warrant divorce. While I do not remember the translation quoted, I do remember being startled by the complete set of verses: "I hate divorce, and I hate a man who clothes himself and his wife with violence."

The authors make a tremendous case for divorce in cases of abuse and abandonment. If memory serves correctly, they argue that abuse and abandonment in any area (emotional, physical, financial, etc.) violate and break the marriage vows.

I found this book extremely helpful when I was in an emotionally abusive marriage. My counselor at the time recommended it. Reading the authors' explanation shed a... Read more
I have endured many many years of physical and verbal abuse. I have read quite a few books now on the subject of domestic violence in and out of the church. How sad when Scripture is used out of context to oppress people. As the book states, God hates divorce but also those who are violent (Malachi 2:14-16, for example). It offers a broader interpretation of certain Greek words that help the reader gain a more accurate understanding of the Bible text. God created marriage for companionship and not to be a prison. Understanding the dynamics of abusive relationships (why he abuses and why she stays) helps the victim and those who are called aside to help.

This book was one of my daughter-in-law's college books. It is easy to read, covers the subject well, and is a manual that I have passed on to pastors and women of whom are dealing with abuse. I highly recommend it!
A real eye-opener, not just about abuse but its prevalence in the church. Rather than just dissecting the problem, which is easy to do, it offers suggestions as to how to turn it around.
