Additional Information

Sebastian had done the impossible. He had found the Lord Grimnal, who had disappeared generations before when the Dark One’s armies had trapped him on a distant island. His team of wizards and battle mages had driven off the wizard hunters and destroyed the barrier holding the legendary king.
Now all he had to do was bring him home.
The Dark One wasn’t ready to lose his prize, however, and he had other plans for his enemies. Using portal magic and the dark mage Palose, the emperor moves forward with the phase in his plan to undermine and destroy Southwall and its allies.
Sebastian and his team use their magic compass to discover the sudden surge in the amount of portals in Southwall, behind the great wall which has been the barrier to the emperor’s armies for over a century. In an effort to slow the emperor down, Sebastian and his team head to Litsarin to close the gates for good.
As the emperor moves his forces to counter each move of the battle mage, Sebastian finds himself in a fight against orcs, wizard hunters and the one known as the Betrayer.

I loved the tone of this novel, and in fact it addressed a lot of my concerns of the direction the Series was heading.

First off, Bas is a very young leader who was promoted very quickly. So, I like how the author reflected that in his decisions. He waxes between cocky aggressiveness and wallowing in the number of people killed underneath him. Those are things many young military leaders do. It was nice to read a believable character instead of some young super-prodigy who never makes mistakes or even questions their decisions.

The romance side I thought was believable too. Bas and Yara are past the "new relationship" stage where everything is perfect. So, guess what their conflicting outlooks come out. Does that mean they cannot work it out, no in fact it will make them a stronger couple if they can overcome this adversity. However, what they are going through is completely normal. Though, Ashleen's presence is not helping at all, her decisions... Read more
I have really enjoyed all the other books in this series. However, this book tackles 3 different main sets of character all operating in various parts of the world. My problem with this is the author very abruptly changes from one scene to the next, no preamble and sometimes not even a complete chapter before going somewhere else with another set of characters. Author also has to remind you over and over and over and over again about some of the characters traits and back ground like they are being introduced us a new character and we didn't just read about them 30-40 pages ago. Sincerely hope the next one is better but can't recommend this book though I highly enjoyed the other books leading up to this one.
(3.5) I really love this series and plan on getting the next book but I have some issues with this one:

1) Constantly repeated back story. Not sure if this just needed editing but there were lots of times i reread the same information.
2) This was a side story not the main story. The journey back home felt useless since Sebastian did not accomplish anything at the island nations. A way to feel these distractions were necessary would have gone far.

All in all had this been presented as a side story with the last couple chapters leading off a new book I would would have still bought it and would probably enjoyed it more knowing it was what it was.
