The only aspect that limits the visual appeal and my rating of "Beaux-Arts Architecture in New York: A Photographic Guide" is that it is in black and white and the photographs are from many decades ago. While it would have been much nicer to see the buildings with the benefit of present day photographic technology and in their current surroundings with updated information of each building; the publication date precludes that possibility. Nonetheless, it is a good resource for the student of this period in Architecture.
Wonderful photos of some of New York City's most beautiful buildings. I love that it was published a while ago, so it has real vintage cred.
It's not very long or large. It's a paperback. It's been out of print for a long time and is often difficult to find. But Dover Publications' Beaux-Arts Architecture in New York is far and way the best, most complete photographic survey of the New York Beaux-Arts buildings, perfectly illustrating, as it does, how variable and elastic the execution of the Beaux-Arts style was despite its classical roots. The specially commissioned photographs (by Edmund Gillen) are well reproduced on coated stock; the extended captions are by the Beaux-Arts Grand Old Man, Henry Hope Reed, who has an engaging if rather quaint writing style. Physically, Dover books, with their strong bindings, are built to last, and this volume is no exception.
