This set of discs has been part of my collection for about ten years and bought individually. The reviews below for these discs have been copy-pasted from the individual reviews as previously written.
vol 1 The opus 70 pair including the 'Ghost' trio This well recorded disc made in 2001 presents a most encouraging start to the projected cycle of the Beethoven trios. The Florestan Trio have established themselves firmly at the vanguard of modern performing trios and already have a string of notable recorded triumphs to their name and this shows all the signs of continuing that sequence of winners.
These two trios were written during Beethoven's 'middle' period just after the Pastorale symphony (no. 6). They were written very quickly in just one month after a lapse of just over ten years since the first series of trios. This is currently my favorite set of Beethoven trios. The Florestan Trio play with wonderful character and balance, and they are cleanly recorded by Hyperion. The box set comes with a complete set of notes and is offered at a fraction of the cost of the original discs.
If you look at this and other recordings by former The Florestan Trio, you'll notice that they consistently earn five stars. There is a reason for this! Their playing is (was) consistently excellent, both as individual musicians and as an ensemble. As others have pointed out here, The Florestan Trio emphasize an intimate chamber style; I think it suits these particular Beethoven pieces really well. Their playing is sweetly lyrical, while still having plenty of expressive depth - check out their sublime performance of the slow variations movement in the Archduke Trio. It's made me rethink Beethoven's musical personality. I've heard other recordings and own the Beaux Arts Trio set as well, but I keep coming back to this set.
