While I agree with the previous reviewer that this live performance from 2003 - the Berlioz bicentennial - is rather coarsely and too closely recorded at too high a volume, and that there is indeed quite a lot of stage noise, I still cannot withhold a star from such a triumphantly vibrant account, so well conducted and so majestically sung by the three protagonists.

Berlioz has always suited James Levine's gifts and temperament and he vies with Colin Davis all the way in bringing this mammoth work to life. The performance crackles with energy and the Met orchestra play with extraordinary gusto - I nearly dropped off my perch at the fortissimo orchestral crash which introduces the ghost of Hector. I love this opera, but I'd forgotten how much. The low price and the strong principals--Deborah Voigt, Ben Heppner, and the late, lamented Lorraine Hunt Lieberson--make this recording an attractive purchase. This is not, however, a recording you'll purchase for great sound: it falls, rather, under the rubric of a "historic performance." There's a lot of stage noise, the chorus is not well recorded, and the volume level is mezzo-forte throughout. So it's not the only Les Troyens you'd want--the first Colin Davis recording Berlioz: Les Troyens remains indispensable. Still, don't pass up this one!
this is the best opera I have ever seen in my hole life!!!!!!!!!!! it relly is!!!!!!!!!! I hope you like it too!!! [this is not Geoffrey Moore;
I'm actually his 7-year-old son, but I still like it] you should see it
I first saw the met opera live in HD production and I fell in love with the music
and singing. I say the story is very tragic but I don't care; well, I wish there
wasn't so much dying...
