Even the otherwise loquacious John Muir was at something of a loss for words when he tried to describe Lake Tahoe. Beautiful, scenic, "blue," etc. But whatever the shortcomings of language to describe the scenery, the Tahoe region is the recreational center of the northern Sierra. For those seeking short hiking outings, Tracy Salcedo Chourre's contribution to the Best Easy Day Hike series has long been the guidebook of choice. Popular for over a decade, Ms. Salcedo-Chourre now offers readers a new and fully updated second edition. Unlike many second (and third) edition hiking guides which feature only cosmetic changes, this book offers several new hikes as well as updated maps and GPS coordinates.
Probably the best feature of the second edition is that it extends the Tahoe region to cover Donnor Lake and offers two short nature trails in that region. Also new are the Martis Creek Wildlife Area and the Exercise Trail at Incline Village. At the core of the book,...
Just used this on a trip to Tahoe, June 2013. Very useful book, we went on several of these hikes and it was very accurate and helpful. The only thing I would say is that for the Page Meadows hike the book says to start on the north side of the creek.... I would say to start on the north side of the ROAD, because there is another trail just on the north side of the creek that many people (including us) thought was the trail to Page Meadows. After a mile or so, we realized that it wasn't, back tracked, and then found the trail head across the street. The trail head is not marked, so it's easy to miss it....
Those hikers who enjoyed Tracey Salcedo-Chourre's earlier guides to the North Bay and East Bay around San Francisco are in for a treat with "Best Easy Day Hikes Lake Tahoe." The author provides directions and descriptions for 24 hikes in and around Lake Tahoe, ranging from easy to moderately strenuous, depending on the reader's level of fitness and interest. The trails were apparently chosen to provide a broad selections of sights as well as challenge. The trails begin with the access from U.S. Route 80 and circumnavigate the lake. The author is upfront about the potential additional challenges of altitude, variable weather, and wildlife hazards including bears. Each trail entry has directions on how to find it, a description of the hike itself, and a sketch diagram of the route. Locals might not need any more information; visitors to Lake Tahoe might find one of several topographic maps to be useful for more details on the terrain. Recommended.
