Although this harrowing story involves Armenians, it is not directly about the genocide of 1915, but rather the life-changing aftereffects on the lives of a little girl named Mannig and her older sister, the only surviving members of their massacred family.
This is the true story of the author's mother, who painstakingly recreates Mannig's life in vivid, astonishing detail. I can only imagine how difficult it must have been to write this book....thanks for including photos of the girls in the middle of this book; their story is so visceral, so palpable, that they truly come alive, and it's great to put faces to the names.

By the end of the book I felt like I knew Mannig, and I shared in her sorrows and triumphs as though she was a part of my own family. This account focuses more on survival in Iraq and life after the Armenian Genocide than it does on events that occurred during the genocide, itself, but various atrocities are mentioned throughout. There's a glossary of foreign phrases in the back, but even without the glossary, the phrases can be understood based on context. The book includes a few photos as well, and provides some insight into what it was like for the many orphans who survived the Armenian Genocide alone, without any parents or older relatives to take care of them. These children survived the death march across the desert to be faced with question of, "How, now, do I live?"

Ultimately, this is a story of hope and of never giving up the will to survive, and of learning how to live after your world was destroyed by other people--people and politics over whom you, as a child, have no control.
I enjoyed this story of survival, determination, friendship, and love. It was shocking to read about what the children endured. Thank you for sharing!
