Near the end of World War II, thousands of Allied ex-POWs were abandoned to wander the war-torn Eastern Front. With no food, shelter, or supplies, they were an army of dying men.
As the Red Army advanced across Poland, the Nazi prison camps were liberated. In defiance of humanity, the freed Allied prisoners were discarded without aid. The Soviets viewed POWs as cowards, and regarded all refugees as potential spies or partisans.
The United States repeatedly offered to help, but were refused. With relations between the Allies strained, a plan was conceived for an undercover rescue mission. In total secrecy, the OSS chose an obscure American air force detachment stationed at a Ukrainian airfield. The man they picked to undertake it was veteran 8th Air Force bomber pilot Captain Robert Trimble.
With little covert training, Trimble took the mission. He would survive by wit, courage, and determination. This is the compelling, inspiring true story of an American hero who laid his life on the line to bring his fellow soldiers home to safety and freedom.

This book is the true tale of a young WWII pilot who was essentially forced into serving as a secret agent for the United States government (OSS - Office of Strategic Services) -- without training -- and without recognition-- until the publishing of this book. Toward the end of the war, when prisoners of war were left wandering the countryside, freed, but without food or resources, Captain Robert Trimble was dispatched to come to the aid of these destitute former prisoners. Following orders, he kept his story secret for a lifetime -- until prodded by his son shortly before his death, nearing age 90. This son, the author, researched and confirmed that his beloved father had indeed been forced into involuntary spyhood. This is the story of a true and unrecognized American hero -- which was unearthed by his curious and loving son. I heartily recommend it.
I was born in October,1945 and as such consider myself "one lucky bastard" in that freedom was my first gift after life itself. After a 20 plus career with the NYPD, I have spent the last 28 years teaching fifth grade, and you better believe that I will introduce my students to the heroic exploits of Capt. Robert Tillman. His story has strengthened my own idea of the greatness of that generation, and of the men and women who suffered in so many countries throughout the world. My own daughter-in-law's grandfather "opened up" about the European theater in my classroom, but informed the students that he could not talk about his liberation of an "unnamed" camp, In closing, I was riveted by Capt. Trimble's story and could feel his fear, anguish, and frustration during those "4" months in hell. I found it particularly ironic that I began the book 70 years to the day in February, 1945 as his journey was initiated.

By January, 1945, the powerful Russian army was making its way across Poland and into Germany. During this time, the Nazi prison camps located in Poland were discovered and liberated by the advancing Russians. The stipulations of the agreement at Yalta that was signed by the Russians and the United States stated that all liberated POWs must be treated humanely. The Americans followed the rules while, by and large, the Russians did not. The Russians viewed POWs as cowards, and many were left to survive on their own. In "Beyond The Call", one American airman does what he can to help these forgotten men.
Captain Robert Trimble was a pilot in the Eighth Air Force. He had just finished his thirty-fifth and final mission when he was offered a new position. On the surface, he was given the task of locating American aircraft forced to land in Poland, making necessary repairs, and flying them back to American lines. But the mission turned out to be much more than...
