Bicycling in Indonesia: The Islands of Java and Sumatra
Traveling alone on a bicycle through the back roads of the islands of Java and Sumatra I found myself among the most welcoming and easily met people I have experienced in my journeys throughout Asia. With its thousands of islands and hundreds of languages and countless cultures it is managing to assume a key role in the social, political and economic development of the region, and the world. More importantly to the people I met -- it is providing opportunities for them to pursue their interests and ambitions. Students and young professionals feel they have gotten a good education and are optimistic about their futures. They were free to discuss all aspects of culture and religion and many saw themselves as a generation that is bringing about fundamental changes in their society. Indonesia has logistical lessons to offer the world as we anticipate crushing population growth in this century. Right now -- the people of Indonesia have much to offer as an example of a society that is comfortable enough with itself that it is quick to take a stranger into their homes, and into their lives -- simply because he honored them by choosing to visit their island.
