Those of us who hunt and shoot know Elmer Keith was a giant in the field. "Inventor" of handgun's .357 Magnum, .41 Magnum and .44 Magnum, he was also a long time guide, hunter and prolific writer. So I was pleased to receive a copy of his original text as a gift.

First, since the book was published 1936, it's obvious that Keith speaks of a time few of us have experienced: bigger game, more primitive conditions and possibly hardier hunters (at least much more rugged than this reviewer).

This is supposed to be a somewhat technical treatise on rifles and calibers, and Keith does demonstrate a keen eye for the performance of various rifles and calibers. In doing so, he also gives us a peek into the practices and culture of the times....a peek that is sometimes objectionable today. Nonetheless, this book is a good primer on hunting the West, "best" guns, cartridges and bullets of the times, and an interesting glimpse of a younger Elmer Keith.
Elmer Keith was opinionated, but he knew well of what he spoke. Although the specific information is dated in some cases, the basic advice is timeless. If you plan to hunt the Rockies, Alaska, or Western Canada, this is a must-read. Keith favored large bores for general purpose hunting, because he correctly assessed the shooting ability of the average hunter. Unless you practice constantly under all kinds of conditions, you do not have the ultimate confidence to make the perfectly placed shot, especially if you are out of breath, shooting through brush, rain, or generally adverse conditions. Keith also tells some interesting hunting stories from days gone by. Reading this book is an inspiration of sorts, since you will feel just fine about taking your .45-70 into the Pennsylvania deer woods, or your .338 Winchester Magnum down to Texas after wild hogs. If you are lucky enough to draw a tag for big-horn sheep, practice and practice hard. That .270 or 6.5mm single shot is a whole lot... Read more
Bought this for my uncle and he loved it. It was a difficult time for him as his wife had Alzheimer's. You can't erase the pain from something like that but this book provided a great distraction for him as it is well written and fascinating to people interested in rifles and ammunition.
