A Chief Inspector Pointer Mystery!

When Sir Henry Bachelor was found dead in his library, a bottle of poison clutched in his hand, it would have been assumed to have been a suicide, except for two facts. One, was that his most recent will was missing. The other, is that the poison that killed him was not the same poison as that in the bottle. When this latter fact is discovered, Scotland Yard’s Chief Inspector Pointer is called in to sort the case out, a task made more difficult by too many of those involved keeping too many secrets to themselves. The solution to the case, though, depends on the actions of a black cat named Luck .

I love all the books with Chief inspector Pointer! I'm sorry now I've read them all since this particular book was just recently found. It's not one of my favorites, but it's well worth reading. I confess I was surprised who the murderer was. And kind of sad. But it was a delightful book, that I believe you'll enjoy! G. Gassen
I like Inspector Pointer --- who is tall and fit, with an air of efficiency and impenetrable dark gray eyes. He's efficient in a fight, too, having boxed for the Force. But the focus is not really on Pointer in the Inspector Pointer mysteries, but rather on the solving of the puzzle, and the interrelationships of the characters in the orbit of the crime.

Sir Henry Bachelor is found dead on his library floor clutching a bottle of poison. But suicides often turn out not to be suicides in Golden Age crime fiction, and Sir Henry was in fact murdered. Much of the drama centers on a missing will and an anonymous letter Sir Henry received that alarmed him. He meant to see the police about it.

The plot bristles with romantic entanglements: engagements threatened by straying affections; women who expect or hope to marry Sir Henry; secret trysts; simmering jealousy...

Among the characters is a middle-aged woman mystery writer. Nica is fascinated by the murder... Read more
The story was really good, but it's obvious someone just scanned this book and never bothered to edit it, or if they did, they gave up about halfway through because the errors get worse and more frequent as you read (they even get Inspector Pointer's name wrong several times). But those are the chances you take when you read old books that are only being reprinted because the copyright is expired and someone has found out how to make money with minimal effort. I gave it 3 stars because some of the misprints were so bad that I had to go back and re-read a paragraph because it didn't make sense. Supposedly this book was edited because the forward says that the language was kept mostly intact except for where it would make sense for the reader....somehow I doubt that. Perhaps the publisher should put some effort into EDITING, and more people would take an interest in these old gems. This is the 2nd book I've read in this series and I find the misprints so distracting that I probably... Read more
