Each colored pencil features an extra-smooth Japanese wax colored core designed specifically for coloring. The soft colored cores are surrounded by a cedar casing made from genuine California incense-cedar that sharpens evenly and easily. This casing is covered by a thick, color-matched lacquer that makes it easy for you to find the colors you need. Each colored pencil features a crisp, silver imprint of our Blackwing logo. Not only do our colors look great, our pencils also feel great in your hand. Our colored pencils have the same semi-hexagonal barrel found in our graphite pencils. In addition, these pencils are topped by a silver, metal hex cap that adds a bit of weight, giving the pencils a comfortable, balanced feel. Blackwing was first introduced by the Eberhard Faber Pencil Company in the 1930's. Their cult following included John Steinbeck and Chuck Jones, who proudly used Blackwings to create Bugs Bunny and many other Looney Tunes characters. Due to cost cuts, they were discontinued in the 1990's. But that didn't stop devotees from paying as much as $40 per pencil for unused stock.
