Return to New York Times bestselling author Anne Bishop’s Ephemera, a world of strange and magical landscapes connected only by bridges—bridges that may transport you where you truly belong, rather than where you wish to go.
When wizards threaten Glorianna Belladonna and her work to keep Ephemera balanced, her brother, Lee, sacrifices himself in order to save her—and ends up an Asylum inmate in the city of Vision, far away from all he knows.
But a darkness is spreading through Vision, perplexing the Shamans who protect it—and Lee is the only one who can shed any light on its mysteries....

First, the good:
I did enjoy this book. I love the wild child, the manifestations of the hearts' desires of the people of Ephemera and what that means and how it takes a turn for the very dark.
Finally, we get Lee's story. Sorta. I'll discuss why later, but it's nice to see Lee get his own story where he's not just living on the edge of the action.
We see more of Belladonna and Gloriana and it's great to see how the story continues from her book, where we see how her actions have deeply influenced her and changed her and how it's not something that can just be glossed over. Brilliant.
There is no real resolution of the burning questions of the book. The book essentially ends at a really odd point that just begs for a sequel, which I find extremely irritating because I never saw it coming, and it just might be that there won't be a sequel because Anne has been traipsing around the vital questions for the entire. effing...
It was kind of inevitable that the third book in this series would be about Lee. The two prior entries singled out specific main characters in this world. While a great way to develop a series and keep adding more and richer layers, not all characters, main or supporting, deserve to have their own book.
Lee feels disconnected from his sister Glorianna Belladonna after her return from the cage she built for the Eater of the World. He resents that he wasn't the one to save her, and also wonders what her time in that cage has done to her. Sebastian, being of both Light and Dark himself, has a much easier time connecting to her. This further upsets Lee, and the discord he feels in his mind and heart begins to affect his bridges and connections. He chooses to leave to get away from Belladonna (her Dark side - Glorianna is her Light side). This latest novel from Ms. Bishop is a rather bland account of Lee's travels and trials to find himself again.
Lee still isn’t my favorite character of the series, but he definitely gains dimension and learns a few valuable lessons over the course of this volume. I like the fact that learning and growing doesn’t change him too much; he’s still himself. He believes he’s falling in love with Zhahar, but this isn’t a romance and they face some serious, possibly insurmountable odds. Zhahar is a Tryad. She has two sisters, but the three of them exist in one body. Sort of. One of the three is visible at a time, and while the three share a ‘core’ body, many things change. One might have a stitched up wound, while the other two have bruises in that same place. Their faces and voices are different. Zeela is tougher and stronger than the other two. Sholeh is a bright student but somewhat fragile. Zhahar is a sort of middle ground between the other two. Her people tend to be viewed as demons. Zhahar is trying to find a way to anchor their landscape to the city of...
