The contents of the book can be summarized into a guide of how to approach, develop, and retain leaders in China. However, the book is not supposed to be mistaken for a step by step manual. The book offers tips and strategies that have proven to by successful in the past. The experts that were interviewed to help write the book, are very knowledgeable, experienced and offer very good insight on how they have been successful while working in China. They also talk about what will be needed to be successful in China in the future.
The author of the book is very qualified to write on the subject of business leadership in China. Frank T. Gallo has a Phd in Organizational Psychology as well as an extensive business background in China. His main focus has been the development of the leaders in China. The best part of this book was the fact that it is easy to read. Too many books on leadership are difficult to read, even for MBA students. The book covered all of the key concepts of what makes leadership in China different from leadership in most Western cultures. The book is organized into short chapters with good end of chapter summaries which make it easy to read the book in short sessions without having to try and remember what you previously read. I did think that the time spent towards the end of the book focused on executive coaching in China did not necessarily fit in with the rest of the book and that there was too much focus on that subject. Again, overall good, easy read that I would recommend to someone wanting to learn about the key differences between leadership in China and Western countries.
This was a very good book not that it was extremely sophisticated or complex but in it's simplicity you really get to understand Chinese business. The author states many times how difficult it is to study such an old country with so many different sub cultures but this book focuses on the biggest cities and how business is done. As an American, I have faith that our leadership practices are still more effective and this book somewhat proves this opinion. I learned a lot about the history of China's workplace and the leadership gap that will haunt them for many years to come. If you are interested in global business or would like to study business in macro trends, this is a great book for you.
